Creating Stacks with images is really straight forward, but as a first-timer, the whole idea is likely to be unfamiliar. I’ve created this detailed guide to walk you through the process. If you have questions or comments, please use the comments below.

About a year ago I started down the path of creating Stacks. At the time, I focused primarily on providing professionally crafted flashcards for the iPhone and dismissed the idea of people creating their own flashcards. With Stacks 3.0, the ability to add your own flashcards was finally added, and I couldn’t be happier with the solution. I’d like to share with you why it wasn’t part of version 1.0 and the thought behind the Stack creation tool as it exists today.

Gizmodo features Stacks - iPhone Flashcards

“Stacks has long been one of the prettiest, most polished trivia/flashcard apps, but now, in addition to its huge library (15,000 categorized cards or so) of included trivia, it lets you create your own decks.”
- John Herrman

Today the iPhone Mom posted a review of Stacks iPhone Flashcards. Check it out, she has several promo codes to give away, so leave a comment and claim one.

“Where were these tools when I was in high school and college? An app like Stacks would have been so helpful! I went to school in the days of 3×5 notecards that you held together with a rubber band. My kids who have grown up surrounded by tech are shocked every time I tell them that email didn’t really exist until I was halfway through college and I went to a computer lab to use a computer. Dark ages. I think it’s fantastic that devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch can be turned into study aids. Stacks is a study aid that’s extremely easy to use and I’m very pleased that it allows you to add in your own flashcards.”

I’m planning on watching the FIFA World Cup in the coming weeks and am starting to catch up on the news leading up to the games. To help,  I created a Stack of flashcards to memorize the top 10 players, as posted by the news site Boston.com. On one side I have placed photos of the players, and on the other, their name, country, and position.

You can use it too. If you create any others related to the World Cup, please add them to the comments below.
Enjoy,

Since the beginning, Stacks has spread primarily through word-of-mouth advertising. With the launch of Stacks 3.0 and its awesome ability to now create your own Stacks, I am giving it a bit of a push.

This past weekend I fully revamped the Stacks website with a new look, a video demo, screenshots, and even this blog. The goal was really to make it incredibly easy to share Stacks with others on blogs, forums, etc…

I’ve also posted a press release today and have distributed it to media folks world wide. It is a big experiment in a sense and who knows what will ultimately come of it. Perhaps a write-up in a magazine, a blog, or maybe only some back-links which gets Stacks listed higher on search results. Time will tell, but it is exciting nonetheless.

Stacks, the beginning May 23rd, 2010

Welcome to the newly minted Stacks Blog. Stacks has grown by leaps and bounds over the past year and it is about time to let you in on the progress Stacks continues to make. Whatever the news may be, be it a new Stack, or update to the website, you’ll find a note posted here.

It was just one year ago that I began design and development work on Stacks. I had been laid-off from work at Hewlett-Packard during the height of the recession, and was playing around with ideas for what to do next. The idea for Stacks grew from the feeling that I was wasting time in places I often found myself… Waiting in a grocery line, waiting for an oil change, waiting at the airport… All moments where I knew I could be more productive with my time. As an avid lifelong learner, I wanted to be learning new terminology, memorizing facts, and testing myself with things I learned back in school. I wanted easy access to great content in the flashcard form-factor that I found incredibly useful throughout school.

With my new found time, I decided to give it a go. Version 1.0 was complete by July and after a grueling 4 weeks in the App Store approval process, it went live in August. Version 2.0 was released late in September with several improvements including special character support and image support. Since, new stacks have continued to be added, but overwhelmingly everyone requested the ability to create their own.

Stacks is now in Version 3.0 and with this release, I’m happy to say that users now have the ability to create their own stacks. I’ll talk more about this in another post, but leave it to say, I didn’t want to add this functionality until I knew I could create a fantastic experience to do so. Stacks continues to be a tremendous pleasure in my life and I look forward to sharing the continued progress with you all on this blog.

Prodigiously,
